Abstract
Reconstitution of the soft-tissue envelop to provide stable, durable coverage of orthopaedic implants is an important component in the overall management plan of the orthopaedic trauma patient. When planning soft-tissue coverage, important considerations include the temporal nature of the exposed implant, anatomic region, soft-tissue needs, functional expectations, phase of bone healing, infection, bone reconstruction needs. Patient evaluation and work-up must be thorough, with personal inspection of wounds by the reconstructive surgeon. To maximize patient outcomes, a well-coordinated multidisciplinary team approach is mandatory.
