Abstract
Aviation emissions are growing faster than any other sector and they risk undermining the progress achieved through emission cuts in other areas of the economy. Hydrogen and fuel cell-based technologies could be developed for future replacement of on-board electrical systems in large 'more-electric' or 'all-electric' aircrafts, in order to reduce the emissions at the airport and in high atmosphere. The ENFICA-FC (Environmentally Friendly Inter City Aircraft powered by Fuel Cells) project carries out a feasibility study on all-electric inter-city aircraft to provide a preliminary definition of new typologies of aircraft systems that can be obtained with fuel cell technologies. In this work, a feasibility analysis and a preliminary weight estimation is carried out through the simulation of a complete mission, taking into account two different system configurations for supplying on-board loads of an inter-city aircraft: only-SOFC system and hybrid SOFC-μGT system.
