Abstract
A model is presented in explanation of the observation of sodium D-line emission from Io. The model involves: (1) charged-particle sputtering of sodium from Io's surface, (2) ejection of sodium into a cloud surrounding Io, and (3) resonant scattering of incident sunlight. Observational consequences and tests of the proposed model are also discussed.
