Socio-economic change and disparities within the Paris agglomeration: does Paris have an "inner-city problem"?

This paper uses 1968 and 1975 census data to examine the applicability to Paris of certain concepts related to the inner-city debate. It examines the spatial distribution within the Paris agglomeration of indicators of deprivation. Attention is focussed upon housing and economic problems, manual workers and foreigners. Certain inner northern parts of the agglomeration exhibit both housing and employment deprivations and foreigners are much more closely associated with these areas than are manual workers. Policies relating to housing, employment and suburban development are reviewed and it is suggested that in Paris the expanding surburban housing and employment markets are more accessible to inner-area residents than is often the case in Britain.
