Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between the socio-ecological and economic environments of the tribal belt of Pakistan and points out the importance of an understanding of traditional society in devising socio-economic policies and implementing development programs in the area. Considering some of the problems of the social system, it suggests that development policies addressed to tribal problems should be regional in scope. Planning policies should be designed to limit the importance of resource base factors, whereas the social value system should play a significant role in restructuring the economy. Moreover, development policies should provide a means of combining the communities in an interactive system.
