Abstract

In an interview with the West German art historian Gabriele Sprigath, the East German art historian Peter Feist discusses issues surrounding the “heritage” of art and Socialist Realism and its meaning for visual art in the GDR in the mid 1970s. Feist first discusses the work of Willi Sitte and then moves on to a broader discussion of the significance of artistic heritage to GDR artists. Feist points to nineteenth-century realism, the age of Dürer, German art of the 1920s, and German Romanticism. Feist also touches on art education, emphasizing the need for public engagement with the arts.
