Abstract
ABSTRACT As the prospects for space colonization are realized in the future, understanding and implementing sociopolitical organizational aspects of such colonies are important. The unique characteristics of space colonies require new types of social organization to ensure their long-term sustainability and development. Herein, the lottery principle is explored, which is the deliberate use of randomness for making decisions, as part of sociopolitical organization. More specifically, how social randomization addresses the challenges and problems of space colonies is discussed and assessed. This includes factors of governance, division of labor, and allocation of scarce goods and opportunities.
