Abstract

The COVID -19 pandemic was considered one of the worst global pandemics because of its vast impacts on individual, social, and economic levels. At the same time, the COVID-19 vaccine was developed at a speed unrivaled by any other. This feat created suspicions about the effectiveness of the vaccine, fueled and reinforced by social media. In this paper, we develop a model that links social media use, conspiracy theories, and perceived severity to the behavioral intention to be vaccinated. Data collected from 2001 French citizens was analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. All proposed hypotheses were supported. Insights from multi-group analysis are presented and discussed, as well as future research directions.
