Abstract

In the context of the first parliamentary debate on the legalization of abortion in Argentina in 2018, this chapter analyzes the main characteristics of the discussion on social media, especially on Twitter, as a meaningful site of political debate in the country. First, the chapter focuses on feminist strategies, especially those planned by the National Campaign for the Right to Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion to promote and sustain its points of view in social media. After the bill for legal abortion was approved by the Chamber of Deputies, the study examines the social media response of conservative groups opposed to legal abortion. The uses of digital technologies to increase awareness of the debate are identified, noting that social media platforms became both site of dispute and awareness which articulated intense affects. Data with different hashtags were collected by a scrapping technique, from January to August 2018.
