Abstract

This chapter provides a brief theoretical basis for students and scholars looking to engage in studies of social innovation in sport. Focusing on different conceptualizations, the chapter outlines differences and similarities between the theoretical concepts innovation and social innovation. Tjonndal explores different types of social innovation in sport and provides several empirical examples. “Social innovation in sport: an introduction to the theory” concludes with two examples of disruptive social innovation in elite sport: the introduction of the Youth Olympic Games and the inclusion of women’s boxing in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
