Abstract
In high-intensity work domains, such as anaesthesia and intensive care, high-quality decision-making is critical for achieving good outcomes for patients. In a previous article in this journal, we considered how cognitive biases influence clinical reasoning and decision-making during technical tasks, such as diagnosis.1 In this paper, we consider social bias and the effects of discrimination in healthcare. We define social bias as discrimination for, or against, a person or group, or a set of ideas or beliefs, in a way that is prejudicial or unfair.
