Abstract

The overall aim of this chapter is to provide a summary of the theory and research on enhancing students' success in school and in life through social and emotional learning (SEL). The chapter begins by providing a rationale for SEL, a definition of SEL, and a description of the various dimensions that comprise SEL, including definitions of transformative SEL and systemic SEL. Next, a brief review of extant research that offers strong empirical support for SEL is put forth. Following this, three essential characteristics that comprise an effective systemic approach to SEL approaches are described. The chapter ends by offering some conclusions on how an understanding of SEL has implications for our thinking about education in schools accompanied by some directions for future SEL work.
