Abstract

Summary Soaking jute seeds 3 or 6 hours in 50 ppm or 6 hours in 100 ppm GA solutions caused a highly significant increase about 14–20 % on the germination rate, 84–97 % on the seedling length and 40–65 % on the nitrogen contents of the seedlings, but significantly decreased the total soluble sugar-, monosaccharides and sucrose in 21–33 %. The other doses significantly had no effect. Soaking 3 or 6 hours in 10 and 20 ppm 2,4-D inhibited the germination rate and the seedling elongation processes, pushed the biochemical processes towards disaccharides and nitrogenaccumulation. High doses affected toxicaly. Soaking 3 or 6 hours in 3 ppm or 6 hour in 10 ppm colchicine caused a significant increase, about 25 % on the germimttion rate and 19–38 % on the seedling length, but decreased the monosaccharide contents of the seedlings which followed by an accumulation in sucrose and nitrogen contents. The other doses did not affect either the germination rate or the seedling’s length, however, the sucrose and the nitrogen have more accumulated.
