Abstract
Inflammatory mediators, such as histamine and thromboxane A2, trigger a sustained contraction (hereinafter called tone) of the airway smooth muscle. It was previously shown that tone induced experimentally in healthy mice and humans increases airway responsiveness, but this has never been investigated in asthmatic patients.
