Smoking Habbit Among Doctors: A cross-sectional Study of Turkish Doctors

Abstract

Introduction and aim: Smoking is the most common form of tobacco addiction. Unfortunately, its use among physicians is not less. The aim of the study is to determine these addictive features in doctors who work in our unit, and to give treatment and support to physicians who want to give up. Method: The demographic characteristics of the physicians who work in our hospital and volunteer to participate, such as age, gender, and specialty, were recorded. Questions determining the smoking characteristics were asked. Smoking rates were determined in surgery, internal medicine and dentists. In the smoker group, parameters such as time to start smoking, and addiction status were evaluated. Results: 120 physicians were interviewed for the study, 97 physicians participated in the study voluntarily. According to these results, 56 (57.7%) of the physicians participating in the study are male and 41 (42.3%) are female. Branch distribution of volunteer physicians participating in the study; 23.7% were surgical sciences, 56.7% were internal sciences and 19.6% were dentists. 30.9% of the physicians were smoking. When the first time to start smoking is evaluated; It was seen that it was the most university with a rate of 40.6%. Discussion and conclusion: Tobacco use is a substance addiction. Although physicians have an attitude level at the level of addiction, they may not behave consciously. It is a difficult and long process involving several components such as smoking cessation, replacement and psychological support. Therefore, it is important to ensure that it does not start.
