Abstract
Cosmetic surgeons usually require that a patient cease smoking at least 2 weeks prior to a surgical procedure because there is an increased incidence of flap necrosis, slow wound healing, and postoperative pulmonary problems. The author reviews some of the literature on smokers and nicotine as well as formulates recommendations for the surgeon.
