Abstract

Work on the organ category was initiated in the seventies, starting with the key contribution of Oscar Mischiati. The work about the SMO (Musical Instruments – Organ) attempted to define a systematic approach that would not disconnect the historical and artistic elements from sound generation and mechanical system elements, as these are tightly interconnected also in an instrument as complex as the organ. Sergio Chierici’s effort has laid the foundation for this work as it has lead to the definition of the datasheet format. As some elements of the datasheet are consistent with the elements of other cultural asset datasheets, it is possible to crossreference information among different asset datasheets. For musical instruments other than the organ, it will be necessary to develop a specific cataloguing format based on actual experience with the present SMO format.
