Abstract
Process for selection of material and corresponding mechanical structure design with performance testing for smart material micro-optical systems is presented. With the specific application of the optical system for mobile devices in mind, the present work has an emphasis on a design constraint of small physical dimensions that can be achieved through the simplification of power train architecture and the enhanced efficiency of actuation. Evaluations on advantages and drawbacks in terms of mechanical actuation performance of electroactive polymers are also provided. In addition the present work makes an attempt to optimize fabrication process for each possible smart material candidate for the corresponding mechanical structures. Finally a novel biomimetic micro-optical lens unit using a silicon lens and a dielectric actuator is designed and tested.
