Abstract
The concept of a smart city has become a popular topic among researchers over the last decades. The concept of e-government and smart city are interconnected with each other. E-government focuses on using information and communication technology (ICT) to provide better services. Similarly, a smart city also focuses on utilizing the data on a larger scale to foster innovation. This paper provides an overview and initial understanding of egovernment roles in the local authority in Malaysia. Local authority plays a prominent role in providing government services to the people in the cities and in realizing the smart city concept. This paper contributes to the existing literature on smart city and e-government by providing insight into the roles of e-government as a part of smart city projects.
