Abstract

This article presents and discusses the concept of smart farming – also known as digital agriculture, precision farming, and agriculture 4.0/5.0 – which refers to the use of innovative digital technologies in farming processes and the value chain of food production systems. Digital technologies, such as big data, the Internet of Things, machine learning, robotics, sensors, drones, artificial intelligence, digital twins, blockchain, and similar technologies, are adopted in agriculture to improve the efficiency of farming operations and achieve sustainable, eco-friendly, and high-productive farming. The article provides an overview of the adoption and uses of digital technologies in smart farming. Further, it highlights a particular role of big data and online platforms in digital agriculture and food production ecosystems. Finally, the article discusses how digitalization in agriculture affects farmers and what ethical dilemmas and tensions it brings along.
