Abstract

The paper presents the results of multi‐year field research on intermittent drainage channels in a semiarid steppe environment with sporadic permafrost in Chita Oblast of East Siberia. A focus of the study is on seasonal dynamics of the channels, which in winter involved, among other things, the formation of soil polygons, icings, hummocks, and frost cracking and in spring and summer the development of solifluction terraces. Attention also is directed to changes in the drainage channels in response to multi‐year climatic cycles. Runoff from icings (naledy) was observed to play an important role in the growth of some channels.
