Abstract

The humic acid fraction of sludge obtained from waste water of olive mills after disposal in isolated lagoons was chemically characterized by amino acid and sugar analyses and by flash pyrolysis-GC-MS. The sludge humic acid fraction consists of polysaccharides, proteins, lignins and relatively high amounts of C 16 and C 18 fatty acids. Although the composition of this material is different from soil humic acids it is concluded that the sludge has good soil fertilizer properties.
