Abstract
AbstractThe meteoric rise of Prime Minister Igor Matovič, the leader of the anti‐corruption movement Ordinary People and Independent Personalities/Obyčajní ľudia a nezávislé osobnosti (OĽaNO), which won over a third of parliamentary seats in the 2020 elections, ended abruptly in March 2021. He was forced to resign to save the governing coalition, agreeing to switch positions with Finance Minister Eduard Heger. Matovič, whose improvisational style of politics became intolerable for the coalition partners (and most of the public), fell victim to his decision to purchase the Sputnik Covid‐19 vaccine from Russia, which undermined the European Union's vaccination strategy and raised concerns about Slovakia's foreign policy direction.
