Abstract
Optical slits and similar small openings may be easily calibrated in width or area without the troublesome diffraction effects which occur at visible wavelengths and make accurate measurement very difficult. One employs photons of much shorter wavelengths, the soft X-rays emitted by a radioactive source, 55Fe for example. With such a source and a suitable photon detector, width calibrations to micrometer dimensions are quickly made.
