Abstract

Ball-milled Kerala beach sand sillimanite could be conveniently slip-cast in an alkaline liquid medium to form useful refractory shapes like thermoelement supports, thermocouple sheaths and melting crucibles. The results of chemical analysis, particle size distribution of the ball-mill ground material, the pH-relative viscosity relationship using some deflocculants and a Mariott tube viscometer and the fired properties of well-dispersed, slip-cast sillimanite samples have been presented. It was observed that dense slip-cast sillimanite refractory wares could be obtained by a suitable treatment of the material.
