Abstract
This paper focuses on the application of sliding mode control theory to distributed parameter chemical process systems. For a class of partial differential equations, the method of characteristics is used to exactly transform the distributed parameter system to a finite set of ordinary differential equations, allowing for the implementation of geometric methods to extend sliding mode concepts. Through simulations the method is shown to be effective in controlling a steam heater.
