Abstract

This study is devoted to the hitherto neglected issue of the care of Silesian castle libraries after 1945. A general introduction and a brief outline of the history and functioning of the National Cultural Commission as the central body for the administration of state cultural property are followed by the main part of the work, focused on individual Silesian castle libraries of which there is evidence in the Agenda of the National Museum, a source consisting of materials of the National Cultural Commission, the State Monument Care, and documents of the Castle Library Department of the National Museum Library. The paper concludes with a summary of the reasons that may have led cultural workers of the time to ignore the frequently valuable Silesian castle collections.
