Abstract

Objective To investigate the sleep quality,mental health status and correlates among railroad workers.Methods A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted among a representative sample of railroad workers who worked within the precinct of Jinan Railroad Branch Bureau.Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQi),Sleep Behavior and Quality Scale(SBQS),Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS),Zung's Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),Symptom Checklist-90(SCL-90),Life Event Scale(LES),Simple Coping Style Questionnaire,Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ),Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS)and self-designed demographic questionnaires were employed in the study.Results The prevalence of poorer sleep quality was 21.9%,and there was no significant differences between males and females(23.2%vs 14.6%,P=0.18).Sleep quality was significantly correlated with anxiety,depression,being locomotive driver,family economic status,etc(P<0.05~0.01).Railroad workers had higher SCL-90 factor scores in somatization dimension,anxiety dimension,hostility dimension,phobic dimension,paranoid dimension and psychoticism dimension,as well as more positive items than the norms(P<0.05~0.01).The mental health status was significantly correlated with sleep quality,mood stability,negative life events,personality,coping style,and job satisfaction(P<0.05~0.01).Conclusion The sleep quality and mental health status of railroad workers were associated with multiple factors.
