Abstract
The text examines the attitude of Bulgarian expatriate merchants to some Slavic educational centers in the Habsburg monarchy through the prism of the educational needs of the emerging Bulgarian nation since the middle of the 19th century. The research is based on archival sources of the 19th century, namely on partially preserved documents of two Bulgarian charitable organizations abroad - the Bulgarian Patriotic Society “Progress” (Vienna) and the Charitable Society in Bucharest.
