Abstract

Fatigue crack growth experiments have been performed on centre cracked specimens of A1 2024-T351. For two plate thicknesses (6 and 10.3 mm) experiments under constant stress intensity and under constant stress amplitude have been carried out. It appeared that at higher ΔK shear lips develop at the edges of the specimen, giving rise to slant crack growth. For constant ΔK tests the width of the shear lips reaches an equilibrium state of width. It requires some crack growth before this steady state is reached. Both the steady state and non-steady state will be described. The results obtained in the constant ΔK tests are used to explain the behaviour under constant stress amplitude loading.
