Abstract

The progress of civilization so far has not solved the main cause of various health problems af-fecting seniors, which is the aging process. Among the possible causes of this phenomenon im-munosenescence is mentioned, which is the progressive accumulation of functional pathology and the increasing loss of features typical of a healthy immune system. This review, although unable to exhaust the subject, focuses mainly on describing the aging of the most important cells of the immune system (T and B lymphocytes), with particular attention to the relationship be-tween the dysfunction that accumulates in them over time and the effectiveness of vaccinations in this population. The authors hope that the studies presented will be helpful in gaining a deeper understanding of the implications of aging of the immune system for vaccination strategies.
