Abstract
DIFFERENCES in susceptibility between breeding groups of chickens to inoculations with Rous sarcoma virus on the chorioallantoic membrane of the embryo were investigated by Prince (1958), Dhaliwal (1963), Crittenden et al. (1963), and Bower et al. (1964, 1965). These investigations measured the degree of susceptibility in terms of number of small tumors or pocks on the membrane. Waters and Burmester (1961) made intracerebral inoculations of Rous sarcoma virus and measured susceptibility in terms of mortality or survival of the chick. These methods do not permit a quantitative appraisal of the progress of response in terms of tumor growth or tumor numbers over an extended period of time. They also do not allow detection of retrogression of tumors. Work by Crittenden et al. (1963) with inoculation of tissue cultures of embryos may facilitate these observations.
