Abstract

The Semi Circular Bend Specimens loaded in symmetric three point bending were considered to investigate the size effect in PLA and PETG specimens obtained using FDM technology. Four specimen sizes were manufactured with radius R = 10, 20, 30 and 40 mm, with thickness of 6 mm and tested. A strong size effect for PLA and PETG materials obtained through additive manufacturing is experimentally demonstrated, representing the transition between strength of materials approach (with no size effect) and asymptotic case of linear elastic fracture mechanics. This agrees well with the size effect law proposed by Bažant (2002) and Zdenek et al. (2003).
