Abstract
Professor N Thompson's interesting article (Physics Bulletin July 1978 p314) on the proposed 'core' syllabus for sixth-form physics nicely illustrates the absurdities we have created for ourselves in the transition from secondary schools to higher education. In my personal opinion, which is not necessarily that of the Trustees of the Nuffield Foundation or that of the Nuffield Science Teaching Project, the current attempt to square the circle of N and F merely demonstrates the truth of what we should all have recognised long ago – that the place of the sixth form in British academic life needs much more radical reappraisal.
