Abstract

This chapter discusses the effective network security standards for a large business operating a number of interconnected networks including both wide area trunk lines and LANs. These standards are organized for convenience of reference by network and systems users. Security measures must be provided in a convenient form for business users to apply to protect all applications on the network. In today's business environment, security standards should be written for the entire information network and not just for data centers or local processing situations. Effective network security standards address the total network environment and should establish security protection elements at the following four levels: (1) the wide area network level, (2) the central computer level, (3) the LAN level, and (4) the workstation level.
