Abstract
Sir William Manchester occupies an unique position in New Zealand plastic and reconstructive surgery. He was responsible for setting up the first civilian plastic surgical units in the New Zealand Public Hospital Service, first at Burwood Hospital near Christchurch, and later at Middlemore Hospital in the Auckland area, where he spent most of his professional life. This paper provides a brief account of the early Manchesters, immigrant settlers from England, then summarizes William H. Manchester’s influential achievements. Mention is made of his war service, his cleft lip and palate surgery, his service in the interests of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the International Confederation for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and his energetic interest in teaching plastic surgery to local and international trainees.
