Abstract

Abstract Unlike many philosophers of science who generally concern themselves only with physics, Popper has aimed at influencing the social sciences. Whereas in the English-speaking world Popper is most often associated with his Logic of Scientific Discovery, where he first develops his falsification thesis, in the German-speaking world Popper is regarded as one of the world’s most important philosophers of social science (Popper, 1987c, p. 54). It is unfortunate that there seems to be no full treatment of Popper’s philosophy of the social sciences, or of economics, his favorite social science. If one wants to assess whether and to what extent economists have used and benefited from Popper’s philosophy, one must inevitably first understand Popper’s philosophy itself.
