Abstract

Henry Capel Lofft Holden , who died on 20 March, 1937, was born in Cheltenham on 23 January, 1856. He was the eldest son of the Reverend Hubert Ashton Holden, LL.D., Litt.D ., a member of an ancient Staffordshire family, and of Laetitia, daughter of Robert Emlyn Lofft, of Troston Hall, Bury St. Edmunds, the last male descendant of the first Earl of Essex. The Reverend Hubert was a distinguished classical scholar, who at the time of his son’s birth was Vice-Principal of Cheltenham College.
