Abstract

The kinetics and densification study of the equimolar mix of MgO-CaO-AI2O3 at 1275°, 1300° and 1340°C indicated significant change in densification only at 1340°C. At 1275° and 1300°C, no densification was observed and the fired bulk density was found to be lower than the green bulk density. However, at 1340°C, considerable densification was observed due to sintering effect even in 15 min and maximum densification was seen in 7 h. The volume decrease observed on sintering was found to be 50.74%, which was accompanied with the formation of a small amount of calcium aluminate phases. The activation energy for densification of the optimum composition was found to be 79.4 kcal/mole. The optimised equimolar composition of MgO, CaO and AI2O3 which attained maximum densification at 1340°C in 7 h, showed apparent porosity, cold crushing strength and fusion temperature values of 1.82%, 2890 kg.cm−2 and 1498°C respectively.
