Abstract

Sinology and politics. On Étienne Balazs. The posthumous reputation of Étienne Balazs (1905-1963) comes largely from his perceptive analysis of the characteristics of the elitist class who ruled the Chinese empire since the Song – an epoch which he deemed forerunner of modern times in China. For an attentive audience, it could appear in his teaching a veiled parallel with the totalitarianism of the communist regime recently installed in China. Now the discoveries allowed by Internet disclose the deeply humane commitment of this man hurt by life, follower of a deep-rooted anti-communism and of a libertarian ideology opposed to the state.
