Abstract

The probability of luminescence f( 1Δ g) for a number of solvents is determined as the ratio of the experimentally measured luminescence quantum yield and the lifetime. The value of f varies over a wide range. The data show specific perturbations of the O 2( 3Σ g −)←O 2( 1Δ g) electronic transition induced by the solvents. The low value of f in water agrees with the extremely low luminescence quantum yield and explains the difficulties of recording the luminescence spectrum of O 2( 1Δ g) in water.
