Thetransmission characteristics of this device features steady and self -pulsing states,leading to chaos.Nonlinear optical elements are becoming more important as research on optical computingand optical data processing intensifies. One important nonlinear optical device is thenonlinear optical waveguide coupler. This device is capable of all -optical switching1 -2and optical pulse compressions-4.A nonlinear optical waveguide coupler is shown schematically in Figure 1. The twowaveguides are placed close enough together to allow evanescent wave coupling between them.The waveguides and /or the surrounding material are assumed to possess a Kerr -type non-linear refractive index.Experimentally, nonlinear waveguide couplershave been fabricated using an integratedoptics approach5 -6, or by placing a nonlinearlayer between the two halves of a polished
