Abstract

Single transverse and longitudinal mode operation of semiconductor lasers is an ultimate objective of laser device designing. It has recently been demonstrated that the transverse mode instability encountered in conventional stripe-geometry (AlGa)As lasers can be prevented by introducing a passive waveguide structure: a channeled-substrate-planar (CSP) structure.1) The CSP semiconductor laser operates stably in the fundamental transverse mode at current levels higher than twice threshold. In this paper, the details of the CSP laser, in particular its transverse and longitudinal mode control, are discussed.
