Abstract

Objective To analyze the effect of single sialic acid ganglioside combined with lipoic acid on elderly patients with type 2 diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DNP).Methods Eighty elderly patients with type 2 DNP were randomly divided into two groups, the control group (40 cases) and the treatment group (40 cases).Patients in control group were treated with methycobal on the basis of conventional treatment, while patients in treatment group were treated with single sialic acid ganglioside combined with lipoic acid on the basis of conventional treatment. They were treated for three weeks. The motor conduction velocity (MCV) and sensory conduction velocity (SCV) of the median nerve and common peroneal nerve were detected before and after treatment. The C reactive protein (CRP) levels were also detected. Results The total efficiency rates were 85.0% in the treatment group and 67.5% in the control group, there was significant difference (P < 0.05).The MCV and SCV of the median nerve and common peroneal verve improved after treatment, while the treatment group was superior to the control group (P < 0.05).The CRP level of the treatment decreased more than that of the control group (P < 0.05).Conclusions Single sialic acid ganglioside combined with lipoic acid is worthy of clinical application. Key words: Single sialic acid ganglioside; Lipoic acid; Diabetic peripheral neuropathy
