Abstract
Beta or gamma rays, when directly incident on the window of an optically shielded photomultiplier tube, yield a typical single photon spectrum. The single photons are possibly generated in the glass window of the photomultiplier tube through excitation of atoms in glass by electrons. The coincidence resolving time has also been measured with a 60Co gamma source and a pair of optically shielded photomultiplier tubes detecting single photons.
