Abstract
Background: Migration of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is a rare complication, and its retrieval is accomplished either by laparotomy or laparoscopy. Case: The case of a 35-year-old patient presenting with low back pain, who had undergone insertion of an IUCD 4 years earlier, is described. No gastrointestinal, urinary, or orthopedic cause could be identified to account for her symptoms. Imaging studies showed the IUCD to have migrated intraperitoneally to a retrosigmoid location. Results: The device was retrieved successfully with a single-incision laparoscopic approach, using conventional laparoscopic instruments. Conclusions: This first reported case describing the use of single-incision laparoscopic surgery for retrieval of a migrated IUCD confirms the feasibility and safety of this approach in the treatment of a rare complication.
