We describe unidirectional, single frequency, Q-switched operation of a laser diode-pumped, non-monolithic, Nd: YAG ring laser. We have obtained pulse energies of 20 μJ and 18 ns duration, corresponding to a peak power of approximately 1 kW at a repetition rate of 500 Hz.
