Abstract
Subject Singapore's political situation. Significance Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on January 26 rejected a timeline of six-nine months for selecting the country’s next leader. Former prime minister and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong suggested the time frame in a December 31 Facebook post. Impacts Lee’s budget may include an increase to the Goods and Services Tax. Uncertainty regarding Lee’s successor will not erode the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP)’s political strength. The emergence of the 16-member ‘fourth generation’ (4G16) leaders’ group could lead to tensions within the cabinet. Concerns over the succession will have no impact on Singapore’s current economic recovery. The KOM corruption scandal will not hinder the PAP’s chances in the next general election.
