Abstract
This article describes the integration of component models developed in a companion article (Cheung and Braun 2013) into a system model that can predict the impacts of faults on vapor compression equipment performance. The system model is part of a tool that is being developed to evaluate the performance of fault detection and diagnostics tools (Yuill and Braun 2012). Models of various faults, including non-standard charging, heat exchanger fouling, compressor valve leakage, and liquid line restriction, are assembled into the system model. Charge tuning was conducted with a new tuning equation to improve the accuracy of charge estimation. The simulation results were validated with experimental observations for eight cooling systems, and the model provided very good accuracy over a wide range of conditions under both normal and faulty conditions. The model correctly predicts the effects of faults on states and overall performance indices and can be used in place of measurements for fault detection and diagnostics evaluation.
