Abstract

This paper describes the design and assembly of a simple Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) system to perform Flash Thermal Programmed Desorption (FTPD) Spectroscopy. Besides the mass spectrometer, the system includes Photoelectric Work Function (WF) measurement capability and ion sputtering. This system is especially suitable for the study of the interactions of low molecular weight gases with metallic surfaces. Such an UHV system is not commercially available. However, the vacuum components and accessories can be separately purchased in specialized manufacturers. In order to reduce costs, the chamber and the dewar shaped sample holder were built in the Institute workshop. The estimated price of the whole system, ready to be used is US$ 70,000. A specially written PC software handles data in real time at an effective rate of 200 Hz.
